About the project
When Fleetsu approached Voplis, it was a successful company providing an easy-to-use fleet management solution. The company used easily fitted plug-n-play GPS devices to establish fleet position, direction, and speed. All vehicles could be visible on the map at any time due to the GPS tracking hardware. The solution was affordable and ready to use in less than 5 minutes.
However, the times have been changing rapidly, and the company was looking for ways to simplify the workflow and eliminate hardware use. That’s when our team’s mobile location tracking management expertise came in useful.
Fleetsu’s main product requirement was frequent and precise location tracking in the background to capture quality data for further analysis. The main challenge was to provide the solution as accurate as the previously used hardware for tracking and data collection.
We offered native mobile development with the help of supportive functions like device activity tracking, significant-change location service, and constant iterative testing to meet our client’s expectations.
01/ Discovery Phase
The Discovery process for Fleetsu was short yet necessary to understand the ‘as is’ and ‘to be’ states of the fleet management process. The client had already had an admin panel where the data from GPS tracking hardware was aggregated, analyzed, and viewed. And as the app we were to develop was targeted at drivers, our product team concentrated on the driver’s main user flows and described all indicators to be tracked and shown on the client-side.

Using the company’s branding materials, we created a clear and well-organized design for drivers who use the app daily. The main accents were made on the structure to ensure that a diverse target audience easily perceives the data provided on the trip logs and drivers’ details in the driver score dashboard.

02/ Product design
The location tracking function operates when the user has an “On Duty” status. As soon as it is on, the device starts to track and record all movement data. Users can set “Off Duty” status when the trip is over to enter Privacy Mode.
NFC tracking is used for locating nearby vehicles. Users can see them in the map and list views. After selecting the needed vehicle in the app, users can assign themselves to it and start their trip.
Driver Score & Logbooks
Users can see the primary statistical data on their trips for the last seven days, including harsh and speeding events. Based on this data, the driver score is calculated.
There is also a possibility to check the list of records on each trip, filter the list based on the trip purpose (classified, unclassified), see each trip’s details, and view trip statistics data over the selected period.
The app has integrated Voice Commands, which allows drivers to use voice commands to activate certain features of the app, such as Duty Mode, Check-in, and Requesting Assistance. This feature saves drivers time and effort, as they can quickly perform these actions without having to navigate through the app manually.
The system uses biometric authorization, such as fingerprint or facial recognition, to validate user identity and provide an additional layer of security. This helps prevent unauthorized access by someone other than the authorized user.
Supporting CarPlay and Android Auto
Supporting CarPlay and Android Auto allows users to access app’s features through their vehicle’s infotainment system. This integration helps to improve driver safety and reduce distractions on the road while providing a more convenient way for users to manage their fleet.
We managed to create a mobile location tracking app up to the accuracy level of previously used GPS tracking devices, leveraging all our previous experience. In tight cooperation with the client’s backend, incorporating the best Scrum management methodology, we started with the Android app development, and iOS followed shortly.
When scaling, Fleetsu concentrated on broadening the connection of mobile technologies with plug-in vehicle devices/microchips. So the development extended to using mobile NFC instead of QR-code scanning for drivers to connect to their vehicles.
